Silmaärritusi, often referred to as eye irritation, describes a range of conditions that cause discomfort, redness, and inflammation in the eyes. These irritations can stem from various sources, including environmental factors, allergies, infections, and physical trauma.

Common environmental causes include exposure to smoke, dust, chemicals, or dry air. These can strip the eye of its natural lubrication, leading to a gritty sensation and redness. Allergic reactions, such as hay fever, can trigger the release of histamines, causing itching, watery eyes, and swelling.

Infections, like conjunctivitis (pink eye), are caused by bacteria or viruses and can result in discharge, pain, and blurred vision. Foreign bodies, such as a speck of dust or an eyelash, can cause immediate pain and tearing as the eye attempts to expel the irritant. Overuse of contact lenses or improper lens hygiene can also lead to significant irritation and potential infection.

Symptoms typically include redness, itching, burning, a gritty or sandy feeling, excessive tearing, and sometimes blurred vision. Mild irritations often resolve on their own with rest and avoidance of the offending agent. However, persistent or severe symptoms, especially those accompanied by pain, light sensitivity, or vision changes, warrant medical attention to rule out more serious underlying conditions and receive appropriate treatment. Treatment strategies depend on the cause and may involve artificial tears, antihistamines, antibiotic or antiviral medications, or removal of foreign bodies.
