Silmäripsiä

Silmäripsiä, commonly known as eyelashes, are fine hairs that grow from the edge of the eyelids. They play a crucial role in protecting the eyes from dust, debris, and other small particles. When an object approaches the eye, the eyelashes trigger a blink reflex, helping to keep the eye moist and clean. They also help to filter out sunlight and can reduce the amount of wind that comes into direct contact with the eye's surface.

The length and thickness of eyelashes vary among individuals and are influenced by genetics. Eyelashes, like other body hairs, go through a growth cycle consisting of an anagen (growth) phase, a catagen (transition) phase, and a telogen (resting) phase. This cycle ensures that eyelashes are constantly being renewed. The eyelashes on the upper eyelid are generally longer and more numerous than those on the lower eyelid.

In many cultures, long and full eyelashes are considered aesthetically pleasing. This has led to the development of various cosmetic products and treatments aimed at enhancing their appearance, such as mascara, eyelash curlers, and eyelash extensions. Some individuals also opt for procedures like eyelash perms or tinting. While often viewed primarily for their cosmetic appeal, the protective function of eyelashes remains their primary biological purpose.
