Silkkisiltä

Silkkisiltä is a Finnish term that translates to "silken bridge" and refers to a type of traditional Finnish ice bridge. These bridges were constructed using intertwined branches, often birch or willow, which were then packed with snow and ice. The snow and ice would freeze, creating a relatively smooth and sturdy surface that could be used for crossing frozen bodies of water, such as rivers or lakes.

The construction of silkkisiltä was a communal effort, especially in rural areas. Villagers would gather branches and work together to build the bridge before the harshest winter weather set in. The branches provided a framework and prevented the snow and ice from simply washing away or collapsing. The resulting structure was often wide enough to accommodate foot traffic and sometimes even horse-drawn sleds.
