Sikulis

Sikulis is a genus of flowering plants in the family Orchidaceae, commonly known as the butterfly orchids. These terrestrial orchids are native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia and Australasia. The genus was first described by botanist Robert Brown in 1810.

Sikulis orchids are characterized by their pseudobulbs, which are swollen stem segments that store water and nutrients. They typically have one or two leaves that emerge from the top of the pseudobulb. The leaves are often leathery and oblong. The flowers of Sikulis orchids are borne on erect or arching inflorescences and are known for their delicate, often fragrant blooms. The petals and sepals are usually similar in shape and size, and the labellum, or lip, is often prominently lobed and can be brightly colored.

Species within the Sikulis genus are found in a variety of habitats, including rainforests, woodlands, and savannas. They often grow in well-drained soil or on moss-covered rocks. Sikulis orchids are popular among orchid enthusiasts for their attractive foliage and elegant flowers. However, their cultivation can be challenging, requiring specific conditions of light, humidity, and temperature to thrive. Conservation efforts are in place for some species due to habitat loss and overcollection.
