Sijamuotoon

Sijamuotoon is a term used in Finnish grammar to denote the illative form, the directional case that marks movement toward a place, object, or goal. As part of the Finnish sijamuodot (cases), the illative expresses destination and is commonly translated into English as “into” or “to.”

Morphology and variation: The illative is formed by attaching a suffix to a noun stem, with the exact ending varying according to stem type and vowel harmony. Common illative endings include forms such as -oon, -öön, -iin, -ään, -een, -uun, among others. The stem may also undergo minor phonological changes, such as consonant gradation, before the ending. Examples include taloon (into the house), kotiin (to home), kaupungiin (to the city), and metsään (into the forest).

Usage: The illative is typically used with verbs of motion or with phrases indicating a destination. It answers the question “Where to?” and contrasts with other location forms used for static position. For example, Olen talossa means “I am in the house” (inessive), whereas Menen taloon means “I am going into the house” (illative).

Relation to other forms: The illative is one of several Finnish location cases. It is distinguished from the inessive (in), elative (out of), allative (onto/onto towards), and other cases by its directional function.
