Siirtokuntien

Siirtokunta, in Finnish, refers to a settlement or community established by a nation, group, or organization outside its core territory. The term emphasizes the act of founding a populated outpost rather than the mere possession of distant land. In historical and political discussion, siirtokunnat are often discussed as part of colonization processes, where settlers, administrators, and economic actors create a linked but geographically separated community.

In Finnish usage, siirtokunta can describe various forms of foreign settlements, ranging from official colonial outposts to missionary stations or trader posts. The concept is closely related to, but distinct from, siirtomaa, the broader notion of a colony, and from siirtolaisuus, emigration or the movement of people away from their homeland.
