Sigurime

Sigurime is the Albanian term used for insurance and related guarantees. The plural segurime refers to insurance policies or guarantees provided by licensed insurers. The verb siguroj means to insure or guarantee, and the noun form is used to describe the instruments that transfer risk from individuals or organizations to an insurer in exchange for a premium.

The term covers a range of products designed to provide financial protection against specific risks. Common types include sigurime jete (life insurance), sigurime shëndetësore (health insurance), sigurim automjeti (auto insurance), and sigurime pronësore ose dëmtimesh (property and casualty insurance). Liabiliteti (liability insurance) and sigurime udhëtimi (travel insurance) are also widely offered. Each segurim defines what is covered, the coverage limits, deductibles or exclusions, and the duration of the contract.

A segurim typically begins with underwriting, where the insurer assesses risk and determines the premium. The policyholder pays a premium (often periodically) in exchange for covering specified risks. When a claim is filed, the insurer evaluates eligibility according to the terms of the policy and, if approved, provides compensation or services up to the stated limits. Policies may include riders or add-ons to tailor coverage to individual needs.

Regulation and consumer protections: segurime are provided by licensed insurers and operate under the supervision of the relevant financial authorities in the country. Regulatory frameworks require clear disclosure of terms, premiums, coverage, exclusions, and claims procedures, as well as mechanisms for resolving disputes and protecting policyholders.
