A signkonvensjon, or sign convention, refers to a set of agreed-upon rules used to interpret the meaning of symbols, signs, or graphical representations in various fields such as mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science. These conventions ensure consistency and clarity in communication, reducing ambiguity when interpreting diagrams, equations, or technical drawings.

In physics, for example, sign conventions are commonly applied in optics and mechanics to standardize how quantities like distances, angles, and directions are represented. A well-known example is the Cartesian coordinate system, where positive and negative directions are defined along the x-, y-, and z-axes. Another common convention is the use of right-hand rule in electromagnetism, which dictates the direction of magnetic fields and currents.

In mathematics, sign conventions may relate to the interpretation of functions, vectors, or complex numbers. For instance, the argument of a complex number (its angle in the complex plane) is often measured counterclockwise from the positive real axis, a convention that simplifies calculations in polar coordinates.
