Manual signatures involve applying a pen mark to a document, often accompanied by witnesses or notarization in certain contexts. Their legal effect depends on jurisdiction and the nature of the document. Notarization or witness attestations are sometimes required to enhance enforceability and prevent disputes.

Electronic and digital signatures encompass a broader range of techniques that verify identity and ensure integrity without requiring a physical pen stroke. Electronic signatures may be as simple as scanned images, while digital signatures rely on cryptographic methods and public key infrastructure (PKI). In many systems, there are distinctions such as advanced electronic signatures and qualified electronic signatures, with the latter carrying the strongest legal effect in some jurisdictions.

Verification and security are central to signings. Signatures should be verifiable, tamper-evident, and, where applicable, time-stamped. Certificate revocation, secure storage of signed records, and audit trails help maintain trust and reduce the risk of fraud.
