Signaalikäsittelyllä, or signal processing in English, is a field of science and engineering that deals with the analysis, modification, and synthesis of signals. Signals are generally understood as any physical quantity that varies with time, space, or any other independent variable, and that carries information. This includes a vast range of phenomena, from electrical voltages and radio waves to acoustic waves and images.

The core objective of signal processing is to extract useful information from signals or to transform signals into a more desirable form for a specific application. This can involve tasks such as filtering out unwanted noise, detecting specific patterns, compressing data for efficient storage or transmission, or reconstructing signals from partial information.

Signal processing techniques are broadly categorized into two main areas: analog signal processing and digital signal processing. Analog signal processing manipulates continuous signals using physical components like resistors, capacitors, and operational amplifiers. Digital signal processing, which has become increasingly dominant due to the advancements in computing power, operates on discrete, sampled versions of signals using algorithms implemented in software or specialized hardware.

Applications of signal processing are ubiquitous in modern technology. They are fundamental to telecommunications, enabling voice calls, mobile data, and satellite communication. In audio and image processing, they are used for tasks like noise reduction, echo cancellation, image enhancement, and object recognition. Medical imaging, seismic data analysis, radar, sonar, and control systems all rely heavily on sophisticated signal processing techniques. The development of new algorithms and more efficient hardware continues to push the boundaries of what is possible with signal processing.
