Sifferstyrda

Sifferstyrda describes devices and systems whose operation is controlled by numerical input. The term derives from siffror (digits) and styra (to control), and it is used to distinguish operations guided by numbers from those controlled by other modalities such as analog signals or pure program logic. It emphasizes input of digits, such as PINs, codes, or sequences entered via a keypad or dial to determine the device’s next action.

Historically, many mechanical security devices are described as sifferstyrda, notably combination locks and safes that unlock after entering a correct numeric sequence. In contemporary technology, sifferstyrda interfaces are widespread: PIN pads on ATMs, access-control keypads for doors, numeric keypads on various entry systems, and other appliances that require a numeric code for operation. In industrial settings, similar concepts appear under more technical terms such as numeriskt styrd (numerically controlled) or datorstyrd (computer-controlled); however, sifferstyrda may appear in general or consumer-focused descriptions to highlight numeric-input control.

The term is primarily linguistic and descriptive rather than a reference to a specific standard or technology. It overlaps with phrases such as code-based, PIN-based, or keypad-controlled in Swedish usage and is often used to convey the idea of control through digits rather than through graphical, tactile, or continuous input alone.
