Sienitulehdus

Sienitulehdus, also known as fungal infection, refers to an illness caused by an overgrowth of fungi. These fungi can be present on the skin, in the environment, or even within the body. While many fungi are harmless and even beneficial, certain types can cause disease when they multiply excessively or when the body's immune system is weakened.

Common types of fungal infections include athlete's foot, ringworm, and yeast infections. Athlete's foot typically affects the skin on the feet, causing itching, redness, and scaling. Ringworm, despite its name, is caused by a fungus and appears as a circular, itchy rash. Yeast infections, often caused by Candida albicans, can affect various parts of the body, including the mouth, skin folds, and vagina, leading to discomfort, redness, and sometimes discharge.

Factors that can increase the risk of developing a fungal infection include a weakened immune system due to conditions like HIV/AIDS or chemotherapy, the use of certain medications such as antibiotics or corticosteroids, and environmental factors like warm, moist conditions that promote fungal growth.

Diagnosis of fungal infections is usually made through a physical examination and sometimes laboratory tests, such as skin scrapings or cultures. Treatment typically involves antifungal medications, which can be applied topically as creams or powders, or taken orally as pills, depending on the severity and location of the infection. Prevention strategies include maintaining good hygiene, keeping the skin dry, and avoiding prolonged exposure to damp environments.
