Sieninfektio, commonly known as a fungal infection, is a condition caused by an overgrowth of fungi on or in the body. Fungi are microscopic organisms found naturally in the environment, on our skin, and within our bodies. While many fungi are harmless and even beneficial, certain types can cause infections when conditions are favorable for their growth. These conditions can include a weakened immune system, prolonged use of antibiotics, or environmental factors like warmth and moisture.

Fungal infections can affect various parts of the body, leading to different symptoms. Skin infections, such as athlete's foot or ringworm, often present with redness, itching, and scaling. Nail infections can cause discoloration, thickening, and brittleness of the nails. Internal fungal infections, though less common, can be more serious and may affect organs like the lungs or the bloodstream, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems.

Diagnosis of a fungal infection typically involves a physical examination and sometimes laboratory tests, such as a skin scraping or culture, to identify the specific type of fungus. Treatment often involves antifungal medications, which can be topical (applied to the skin) or oral (taken by mouth), depending on the severity and location of the infection. Prevention strategies include maintaining good hygiene, keeping skin dry, and avoiding prolonged exposure to damp environments.
