Siemennäytteiden, also known as semen analysis or sperm count, is a laboratory test performed on a sample of ejaculated semen. The primary purpose of this analysis is to assess the male's fertility. It involves evaluating various physical and microscopic characteristics of the semen.

Key parameters examined include semen volume, the total amount of fluid ejaculated. Sperm concentration, the number of sperm per milliliter of semen, is another crucial factor. Motility, the percentage of sperm that are moving, and morphology, the percentage of sperm with a normal shape, are also assessed. Sperm viability, the percentage of live sperm, may also be determined.

Siemennäytteiden can be used to diagnose infertility, monitor the effectiveness of fertility treatments such as vasectomy reversal, or assess the success of sperm retrieval procedures. The sample is typically collected through masturbation after a period of abstinence, usually 2-7 days. Strict collection protocols are followed to ensure accuracy, and the sample is usually analyzed within an hour of collection. Results are compared to established reference values, and abnormalities in one or more parameters can indicate potential fertility issues. Further investigations may be recommended based on the findings.
