Sidevalg

Sidevalg is a term used in publishing and printing to describe the selection of specific pages or sides of a document for a particular operation, such as printing, binding, or digital export. The term combines side, meaning a page or sheet side in Norwegian, with valg, meaning choice or selection. In practice, sidevalg enables a producer to include or exclude pages when producing a subset of a document, generating different editions, or preparing proofs.

In use, sidevalg is typically implemented through page range specifications or by choosing odd or even pages in pagination and print settings. For example, a designer may print only pages 1–10, or print alternate sides for duplex printing. In digital workflows, sidevalg can apply to exporting to PDF, EPUB, or other formats, restricting content to a defined subset for review or distribution. Good practice is to document the chosen side selections to ensure consistency across print runs and multiple outputs.

Historically, page selection practices date back to manual imprinting and assembling processes. The explicit Norwegian term gained prominence with the rise of Norwegian-language publishing software in the late 20th century and remains common in regional documentation and guides. It is complementary to related concepts such as pagination, page ranges, and print job management.
