ShwachmanBodianDiamond
Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, often abbreviated as SDS, is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a triad of symptoms: exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, bone marrow dysfunction, and skeletal abnormalities. The exocrine pancreatic insufficiency leads to malabsorption of nutrients, causing failure to thrive, steatorrhea (fatty stools), and abdominal distension. Bone marrow dysfunction can manifest as neutropenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia, increasing the risk of recurrent infections and bleeding. Skeletal abnormalities may include metaphyseal chondrodysplasia, a type of bone disorder affecting the growth plates, leading to short stature and limb deformities.
SDS is caused by mutations in the Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome gene (SBDS). The inheritance pattern is autosomal
Management of SDS is supportive and aims to address the specific complications. Nutritional support is crucial
