Shushenskaya

Shushenskaya is an urban-type settlement and the administrative center of Shushinsky District in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. It sits on the Yenisei River in the southern part of the krai, functioning as a regional hub for government services, industry, and culture.

The settlement is closely associated with the Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydroelectric Station, which lies on the Yenisei near the town. The dam and its reservoir form a major hydroelectric complex with an installed capacity of about 6,400 megawatts, making it one of Russia’s largest power facilities. The plant has shaped local employment and infrastructure, and its operations have a significant impact on the regional energy grid. In 2009 a catastrophic accident at the facility led to extensive reconstruction and modernization efforts that affected the town and its surrounding area.

Shushenskaya and the nearby Shushenskoye area are notable for their cultural and historical ties to Leo Tolstoy. Tolstoy lived in exile at Shushenskoye from 1879 to 1881, an episode commemorated by museums and monuments in the region. The Tolstoy-related sites attract visitors and contribute to the area's cultural landscape.
