Shugibukuro

Shugibukuro are traditional Japanese envelopes used for presenting monetary gifts, particularly for special occasions. These envelopes are distinct from everyday stationery and are often elaborately decorated. The term "shugibukuro" itself is derived from "shugi" meaning celebration or congratulation, and "fukuro" meaning bag or envelope.

The design of shugibukuro typically features auspicious colors and motifs. Red and white are common color combinations, symbolizing good fortune and purity. Decorations may include symbols like cranes, pine trees, or plum blossoms, all of which carry positive connotations in Japanese culture. The envelopes are often tied with decorative cords, known as "mizuhiki," which are usually made of paper and twisted into various knots. The style of the mizuhiki can also convey different meanings, with some knots being easier to untie than others, perhaps signifying a desire for the good fortune to be easily received or repeated.

Shugibukuro are most frequently used for gift-giving at significant life events such as weddings, births, graduations, and coming-of-age ceremonies. The amount of money placed inside the shugibukuro is typically given in even numbers, though there are exceptions, and the specific denominations can also carry symbolic meaning. The presentation of a gift in a shugibukuro is considered an important aspect of showing respect and good wishes to the recipient.
