Shrikethrushes

Shrikethrushes are a family of passerine birds found in Australia and New Guinea. The family name, Pomatostomidae, is derived from the Greek words "poma" meaning lid and "stoma" meaning mouth, referring to the hooked beak characteristic of these birds. There are currently seven recognized species of shrikethrush, all belonging to the genus Pomatostomus.

These birds are typically medium-sized, with a plump body, long legs, and a distinctive, slightly decurved beak. Their plumage is generally drab, with shades of brown, grey, and white, often featuring streaking or barring. Shrikethrushes are primarily insectivorous, using their strong beaks to probe bark, leaf litter, and soil for invertebrates. They are also known to eat small vertebrates, fruits, and seeds.

Shrikethrushes are social birds, often seen foraging in small flocks. They are highly vocal, with a range of calls including whistles, chattering, and harsh scolding notes. Many species exhibit cooperative breeding, where younger birds help their parents raise subsequent broods. Nests are typically bulky, dome-shaped structures made of grass and other plant materials, often built in trees or shrubs.

The distribution of shrikethrushes is primarily in Australia, with some species extending into New Guinea. They inhabit a variety of environments, including woodlands, forests, and savannas. While some species are widespread, others have more restricted ranges. Conservation statuses vary among the species, with some considered common and others facing localized threats.
