Shkumbin

Shkumbin is a river in central Albania, one of the country’s notable waterways. It drains a large portion of the central highlands and plains and ultimately empties into the Adriatic Sea along the western coast. The river’s basin covers several counties and supports diverse landscapes, from mountainous terrains to agricultural lowlands.

The river rises in eastern Albania and generally flows westward across the central region. It passes near towns such as Librazhd, Peqin, and Elbasan, before reaching the Adriatic coastal plain. The Shkumbin valley has long served as a natural corridor linking inland areas with the Adriatic shore, contributing to trade and movement through the region.

Hydrology and land use are closely linked along the Shkumbin. The river exhibits a seasonal flow regime, with higher discharge in winter and spring followed by lower flows in summer. Its floodplains support irrigation and agriculture in adjacent settlements, and the river system has been the focus of flood management and water management efforts to protect communities and farmland.

Environmental concerns include water quality and habitat integrity, affected by agricultural runoff and other local sources. Efforts to improve water use efficiency and manage floods are part of regional planning, with infrastructure aimed at supporting farming while reducing downstream risks.
