Ship bilge refers to the lowest internal part of a ship's hull. It is the area where water, oil, and other debris naturally collect due to leaks, condensation, or washing down the deck. This accumulated mixture is known as bilge water.

The presence of bilge water is a constant concern for ship maintenance and safety. It can contain various contaminants, including fuel, lubricants, sewage, and cleaning agents, which pose environmental hazards if discharged untreated. Therefore, maritime regulations mandate the treatment of bilge water before it can be released into the sea.

The bilge system typically includes piping that runs throughout the ship, collecting water from different compartments and directing it to a central point where it can be pumped overboard or to a holding tank.

Modern bilge water treatment systems often employ separators and filters to remove oil and other pollutants, ensuring compliance with environmental standards. Regular inspection and maintenance of the bilge system are crucial to prevent water ingress, detect potential leaks early, and ensure the efficient operation of bilge pumps and treatment equipment.
