Shimonoseki

Shimonoseki is a city in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, located at the southwestern tip of Honshu where the Kanmon Straits separate Honshu from Kyushu. It functions as a major fishing port and commercial hub, with road and rail links that connect the two islands.

Historically, Shimonoseki has been an important maritime center. During the late Edo period the Chōshū Domain used the city as a base, and the anti-foreign campaigns of the 1860s led to the Shimonoseki Campaign, in which Western powers pressured the domain to end attacks on foreign ships. The modern city emerged in the late 19th century and developed as a key port in the region.

The economy centers on fishing and seafood processing, with Shimonoseki renowned for fugu (pufferfish) and tuna. Karato Market is a notable wholesale market where visitors can observe auctions and sample seafood. The city also preserves maritime heritage through museums, waterfront districts, and cultural events such as seafood festivals.

Landmarks and transportation options highlight its role as a gateway to Kyushu. Notable sites include the Karato district, the historic Mojiko Retro area, and the Kaikyo Yume Tower for views over the straits. The Kanmon Bridge and Kanmon Tunnel connect Shimonoseki with Kitakyushu across the straits, while JR lines and local buses provide regional access. Shimonoseki’s climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters.
