Shellinternal

Shellinternal refers to the internal subsystem of a command-line shell responsible for interpreting, validating, and executing user commands. It is not a standardized term across all shells, but is used in some codebases as a name for the core runtime machinery that lies behind the user interface.

In typical implementations, the shellinternal component handles tokenization and parsing of the command line, parameter and variable expansion, and the construction of an execution plan that includes pipelines, redirections, and control flow constructs. It also manages environment state, job control, signal handling, and the orchestration of builtin commands versus external programs.

Builtins such as cd, echo, or export are commonly implemented within the shellinternal layer as internal commands that operate within the shell process; external commands are executed by spawning child processes and, if needed, creating pipelines between them. The separation between internal (shellinternal) and external command execution helps optimize performance and maintain shell state integrity.

Implementations vary by project but typically include a parser to generate an abstract syntax tree or a similar structure, an evaluator or executor that traverses that structure, and interfaces to the operating system for process management, file descriptors, and job control. Some shells expose a public API or namespace named ShellInternal or similar for reuse within the codebase.
