Shekinah

Shekinah is a term derived from the Hebrew word "shakhan," meaning "to dwell" or "to reside." In Jewish tradition, it refers to the divine presence of God. It is not a person or a separate entity, but rather the manifest glory or indwelling presence of the Almighty, especially in a particular place or among a community.

The concept of Shekinah is found throughout the Hebrew Bible. It is often described as a cloud or a luminous light that signifies God's presence, such as during the Exodus from Egypt when a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night guided the Israelites. The Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle were also considered places where the Shekinah rested. Later, the Temple in Jerusalem was seen as the ultimate dwelling place of the Shekinah.

In Rabbinic literature, the Shekinah is often portrayed as being present even when the Jewish people are in exile or suffering, emphasizing God's enduring connection with them. It is also sometimes associated with divine feminine attributes, though this interpretation is not universally accepted. The concept of the Shekinah highlights the immanence of God, His willingness to dwell among humanity, and His active involvement in the world. It is a reminder that God's presence can be experienced and perceived, even if not seen directly.
