Shastasauridae

Shastasauridae is an extinct family of ichthyosaurs, marine reptiles that lived during the Triassic period. The family is named after Shastasaurus, the type genus. Members are known from Middle to Late Triassic rocks in several regions.

Morphology and diversity within Shastasauridae varied considerably. Some species ranged from medium to very large size and possessed elongated jaws with reduced dentition, while others had more typical ichthyosaur skulls. Overall, shastasaurids show adaptations toward a long, streamlined body, paddle-like limbs, and a strong tail suitable for efficient swimming in marine environments.

Paleobiology and ecology of shastasaurids suggest they inhabited open-ocean and coastal habitats. Their feeding strategies likely included suction feeding on soft-bodied prey as well as rapid pursuit of fish or cephalopods, depending on the species.
