Shamkuataran is a lesser-known traditional martial art originating from the southern regions of the Indian subcontinent, particularly in the state of Kerala. The name "Shamkuataran" is derived from the Malayalam words *sham* (meaning "six") and *kuataran* (referring to a specific fighting stance or posture), though its exact etymology and historical roots remain partially obscure. Practitioners believe the art may have evolved from older indigenous combat systems, blending elements of weaponry, body mechanics, and philosophical principles.

The martial art emphasizes fluid, circular movements and the use of natural body alignment to generate power efficiently. While Shamkuataran incorporates traditional weapons such as the *kathari* (a short sword) and *vettukada* (a spear), its core focus lies on unarmed combat techniques, including strikes, joint locks, and grappling maneuvers. Training often includes drills against padded opponents or wooden dummies to refine precision and control.
