Setzling

Setzling is the German term for a young plant prepared for transplantation, commonly produced in nurseries for forestry, agriculture, and landscaping. It usually refers to a plant that has completed its initial seedling stage and is ready for field planting, although the precise age and size vary by species and production method. In practice, Setzlinge can be seed-propagated or propagated vegetatively (from cuttings, grafts, or layering), and they may be sold bare-root or containerized.

The purpose of growing Setzlinge is to establish a robust root system and early shoot growth before field planting. Seed-propagated Setzlinge develop a primary root and lateral feeder roots, while vegetatively propagated Setzlinge are often clonally uniform, which can help ensure consistent performance for orchards or ornamental plantings.
