Serviceisolering

Serviceisolering, often translated as service insulation, refers to the practice of separating different IT services from each other to prevent cascading failures and improve security. The core idea is that if one service is compromised or experiences an issue, it should not be able to directly affect or bring down other unrelated services. This is achieved through various technical and organizational measures.

In technical terms, service isolation can involve network segmentation using firewalls and virtual private networks (VPNs) to restrict communication between services. Containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes are also instrumental, allowing services to run in isolated environments with their own dependencies and resources. Each container acts as a self-contained unit, minimizing the impact of issues within one container on others. Application-level isolation, such as using separate databases or microservices architecture, further contributes to this goal.

From an organizational perspective, service isolation implies clear ownership and responsibilities for each service. Teams are often dedicated to managing and maintaining specific services, fostering expertise and reducing the likelihood of cross-team dependencies causing problems. Incident response plans are also designed with isolation in mind, aiming to quickly contain and remediate issues within a specific service without impacting the broader system.
