In production terminology, serietillverkade items are produced in defined lots or on dedicated production lines as part of series production (serietillverkning). This approach sits between unit production (one-off items) and mass customization, focusing on consistent quality, repeatable workflows, and economies of scale. Standardized work instructions, parts catalogs, and tooling enable efficient manufacturing and easier automation.

Historically, serietillverkning emerged with the industrial revolution and the development of assembly lines, which made large-scale output feasible and cost-effective.
