Sentinellicensing
Sentinellicensing refers to a software licensing model that utilizes the Sentinel HASP (Highly Advanced Secure Protection) hardware key or dongle for license protection. This system, developed by Aladdin Knowledge Systems and now part of Thales, is designed to prevent unauthorized use and copying of software. Each Sentinel HASP key contains a unique identifier and is programmed with specific licensing information for a particular software application. When the software is launched, it communicates with the Sentinel HASP key to verify the license. If the key is not present or if the license is invalid, the software will typically not run or will operate in a limited mode. This method provides a robust way for software vendors to control how their products are deployed and used. The Sentinel HASP system can support various licensing schemes, including standalone licenses tied to a single machine, network licenses allowing multiple users to share a limited pool of licenses, and even more complex subscription or pay-per-use models. Vendors often choose Sentinel licensing for its perceived security benefits and the ability to easily manage and update licenses remotely. The hardware key acts as a physical barrier against software piracy, requiring users to possess the specific dongle to access the licensed software.
