Sensoririippuvuus, also known as sensory overload or sensory sensitivity, refers to an individual's heightened or altered response to sensory stimuli. This condition can manifest in various ways, affecting the perception of sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, and even proprioception (body awareness) and the vestibular system (balance and movement). People experiencing sensoririippuvuus may find ordinary sensory input to be overwhelming, distressing, or even painful.

Common triggers for sensoririippuvuus include bright lights, loud noises, strong smells, crowded environments, certain textures, and sudden movements. The intensity of these stimuli can lead to a range of reactions, such as anxiety, irritability, difficulty concentrating, avoidance behaviors, and physical discomfort. In some cases, individuals may also experience a hypo-responsiveness, meaning they seek out intense sensory input to feel regulated.

These strategies might include creating calming sensory environments, using noise-canceling headphones, wearing sunglasses, or engaging in sensory-seeking activities that provide a sense of calm and regulation. Environmental modifications and supportive social understanding are crucial for individuals experiencing sensoririippuvuus.
