The term signals that while part of the process follows a structured framework—such as defined sampling units, standardized data collection forms, or predefined coding schemes—other aspects are flexible and can be adjusted in response to field conditions or emergent observations.

Because semisystematic does not refer to a single, canonical methodology, its meaning varies by discipline. In archaeology it may describe surveys that use a grid or transect framework in part of the study area but supplement it with opportunistic site discovery or variable observation intensity. In ecology, semisystematic sampling might combine fixed-area plots with targeted searches; in information science, semi-systematic coding can allow new categories to be added during analysis.

Advantages include efficiency and flexibility, while limitations include potential bias from uneven coverage and difficulties in comparing results across studies with different degrees of systematicity. Because of the variable usage of the term, researchers typically specify what constitutes semi-systematic in their study design, describing the exact elements that are systematic and those that are adaptive.
