Semifront refers to a stylistic and compositional approach in visual arts, particularly in photography and graphic design, where elements are arranged in a manner that is neither fully symmetrical nor entirely asymmetrical. This technique blends aspects of both symmetry and asymmetry to create a balanced yet dynamic visual effect. Unlike traditional symmetry, which mirrors elements evenly around a central axis, semifront often incorporates subtle deviations, asymmetrical accents, or partial repetitions to introduce visual interest while maintaining an overall sense of harmony.

The term is most commonly associated with the work of the Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe, who employed semifront in his iconic series *Miyamoto Yoshitaka* (1968). Hosoe’s photographs of the poet Miyamoto Yoshitaka feature a deliberate imbalance in composition, where elements like the subject’s gaze, lighting, or framing are slightly off-center, yet still cohesive. This approach creates a tension between order and spontaneity, evoking a sense of intimacy and natural movement.
