Semifechado

Semifechado is a Portuguese term that literally translates to "semi-closed." It is often used in Brazil to describe a residential development that offers a degree of security and privacy while still allowing for some public access. Unlike a fully closed condominium (condomínio fechado), which restricts entry to residents and authorized visitors, a semifechado typically has a perimeter wall or fence but may have an open entrance or controlled access points that are not as strictly monitored. This means that while the overall area is defined and generally safer than a completely open street, there might be limited pedestrian or even vehicular traffic from non-residents.

The concept of semifechado aims to strike a balance between security and openness. Residents benefit from a more controlled environment, potentially reducing crime and enhancing a sense of community, without the complete isolation that some fully closed condominiums can create. This model can be particularly prevalent in urban areas where the desire for increased safety is present, but completely privatizing public spaces is not feasible or desirable.
