Sellows

Sellows refers to a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family *Rubiaceae*, commonly known as the coffee family. The genus is named after the German botanist Johann Baptist von Sellow (1780–1836), who contributed significantly to the study of South American flora. Plants in the *Sellowia* genus are primarily native to tropical regions of South America, particularly Brazil, where they thrive in forested environments.

The most well-known species, *Sellowia adstringens*, is a small tree or shrub that can grow up to 10 meters tall. It is characterized by its glossy, elliptical leaves and small, white to pinkish flowers that bloom in clusters. The fruit is typically a small, fleshy berry containing seeds. This species is sometimes cultivated for ornamental purposes due to its attractive foliage and flowers.

*Sellowia* plants are often used in traditional medicine in some regions of South America. For example, *Sellowia adstringens* has been employed in folk remedies for treating digestive issues and as an astringent. However, scientific research on its medicinal properties remains limited, and its use should be approached with caution without professional guidance.

Ecologically, these plants play a role in their native habitats by providing food and shelter for various insects and birds. They are generally not considered invasive outside their natural range. Gardeners and horticulturists may grow *Sellowia* species in warm, humid climates, though they are not widely available in commercial nurseries.

Due to habitat loss and deforestation, some *Sellowia* species face threats in the wild.
