Selftoxicity

Selftoxicity is a term used to describe the phenomenon of an organism producing substances that are toxic to itself. This can occur through various mechanisms, including the metabolic production of harmful byproducts, the accumulation of endogenous toxins, or the reabsorption of excreted waste products. While many organisms have evolved mechanisms to detoxify or excrete these substances, in certain circumstances, these processes can become overwhelmed or malfunction, leading to toxic effects.

One common example of selftoxicity involves metabolic processes. For instance, certain metabolic pathways can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are highly reactive molecules that can damage cellular components like DNA, proteins, and lipids. While ROS are also involved in signaling pathways, an imbalance can lead to oxidative stress and cellular dysfunction, a form of selftoxicity. Another instance is the accumulation of waste products that are not efficiently cleared from the body, such as in certain genetic disorders or organ failures.

The concept of selftoxicity is also relevant in the context of addiction. Some individuals may develop a compulsion to ingest or inhale substances that are harmful to their own bodies, even when aware of the negative consequences.
