Self-synchronizing refers to systems that can regain timing and alignment from the data stream itself, without relying on an external clock or timing signal. In digital communication, this capability allows a receiver to determine bit or symbol boundaries and reestablish synchronization after disturbances purely from the received data.

In practice, self-synchronizing systems embed synchronization information within the encoded stream. This enables the decoder to recover alignment by examining a window of consecutive symbols, rather than waiting for a separate clock signal. Such schemes are typically contrasted with synchronous systems, which depend on an explicit clock channel to maintain alignment.

In coding theory, self-synchronizing codes are designed so that valid portions of the data inherently indicate their own boundaries. This property helps the receiver locate the start of subsequent symbols even after errors or loss of framing. Self-synchronizing codes are used in framing and data transmission to improve robustness, though they may incur design complexity or rate penalties compared with purely synchronous approaches.

In cryptography, a self-synchronizing (or self-synchronizing) stream cipher uses feedback from previous ciphertext or plaintext to generate the keystream, allowing decryption to resynchronize after brief losses or errors. This characteristic makes such systems more tolerant of transmission faults, at the cost of potential vulnerabilities if feedback mechanisms are not carefully designed.

Applications of self-synchronizing techniques include data communication protocols, certain line codes, and cryptographic modes like cipher feedback. The approach emphasizes resilience to timing disturbances and error recovery, often trading some efficiency for improved robustness.
