Self-signing refers to the practice of signing data or certificates with the signer’s own private key rather than by a trusted third party. In digital certificates, a self-signed certificate is issued and signed by the entity that the certificate identifies, instead of being issued by a recognized certificate authority (CA). The certificate contains the subject’s identity information and public key, and is signed with the same private key that corresponds to that public key. Because there is no external CA, there is no standard chain of trust.

In TLS and other public-key infrastructures, a self-signed certificate creates a trust relationship only if the client explicitly trusts the signer.Browsers and operating systems generally do not trust such certificates by default, so users must manually install or configure the certificate in order to avoid warnings, or the certificate must be used in an environment where trust is managed privately.

Common use cases include development and testing environments, internal networks, and devices or services that operate without access to a public certificate authority. Self-signed certificates can also be appropriate for development of code signing or for private PKIs where an internal root CA signs internal certificates.

Advantages of self-signing include immediacy, zero cost, and independence from public CAs. Drawbacks include lack of automatic trust on public clients, potential exposure to impersonation if improperly distributed, and the absence of a standard revocation mechanism. Best practices emphasize protecting the private key, using suitable key lengths, and opting for a public CA certificate for services exposed to the wider internet. In internal deployments, a private PKI with managed trust can provide a safer alternative.
