Self-playing is a method in artificial intelligence where an agent learns by playing against itself. In reinforcement learning, self-play generates training data automatically, reducing or eliminating the need for human demonstration data. The approach allows agents to discover strategies through trial and error and to adapt as policies evolve.

The concept gained prominence with DeepMind’s AlphaGo Zero and subsequent systems, which trained solely through self-play combined with neural networks and search algorithms. Self-play relies on self-generated experiences to improve value and policy estimates. Extensions such as MuZero further advance the idea by learning models of the environment without requiring explicit game rules.

Applications of self-playing include perfect-information games like Go, chess, and shogi, where agents have achieved or surpassed human expert performance. The approach has also been explored in video games, multi-agent environments, and robotics simulation, where self-generated interactions drive skill acquisition and strategy development.

Limitations and considerations accompany self-playing. It requires substantial computational resources and careful design to avoid overfitting to the self-play agent’s weaknesses or strategies. There is potential for misalignment with human values or real-world constraints if goals are not properly specified. Evaluation often includes human benchmarks to assess generalization and practical usefulness beyond the self-play environment.
