Selfholding

Selfholding refers to a state or condition where something is capable of maintaining its position or form without external support. This concept can be observed in various fields, from engineering and physics to everyday objects.

In engineering, selfholding mechanisms are designed to remain in place once actuated. Examples include certain types of fasteners or latches that lock into position. A common mechanical example is a self-holding brake, which engages and stays engaged until intentionally released. This is achieved through the design of the braking system, often utilizing friction or specific geometries to resist movement.

In physics, the principle can relate to stability. An object in a stable equilibrium is in a state of selfholding; if slightly displaced, it tends to return to its original position. This contrasts with unstable equilibrium, where a slight displacement leads to further movement away from the original state.

The term can also be applied to materials exhibiting properties that allow them to retain their shape or structure. For instance, certain shape memory alloys can return to a predetermined form after deformation, demonstrating a form of selfholding. In everyday life, a book standing on its own on a shelf could be considered to be in a state of selfholding, provided its own structural integrity and the friction with the shelf are sufficient. The concept emphasizes intrinsic properties or design features that enable an object to resist external forces attempting to change its state or position.
