Selfcannibalism

Self-cannibalism, also known as autokannibalism, refers to the act of consuming one's own bodily tissues or fluids. This is a rare phenomenon that can manifest in various ways, often associated with severe psychological distress or certain medical conditions.

One form of self-cannibalism involves consuming dead skin, such as from nail-biting or picking at scabs, which is a relatively common and generally harmless behavior. More extreme forms, however, can include ingesting hair (trichophagia) or even surgical removal and consumption of non-essential tissues.

The underlying causes are typically complex and can include intense anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or depersonalization disorders. In some cases, it might be a coping mechanism for trauma or a symptom of psychosis. Medical professionals generally view self-cannibalism as a manifestation of severe mental health issues requiring professional intervention and treatment.

While the term "self-cannibalism" might evoke disturbing imagery, the spectrum of behaviors it encompasses ranges from mild, almost unconscious habits to severe, potentially harmful actions. Understanding the psychological underpinnings is crucial for addressing and managing this condition.
