Self-assembly is the process by which components spontaneously organize into ordered structures or functional units through local interactions, without external manipulation. The resulting architectures arise as systems seek configurations that minimize free energy, often under mild conditions and over relatively short timescales. Self-assembly is a central concept in chemistry, materials science, biology, and nanotechnology.

The driving forces are typically non-covalent and include hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and van der Waals interactions, hydrophobic effects, and aromatic stacking. These interactions allow components to recognize complementary partners and form stable, repeatable motifs. Common manifestations include self-assembled monolayers on metal or oxide surfaces, block copolymer thin films that form lamellae, cylinders, or gyroids, and nucleic acid–based structures such as DNA origami. In biology, self-assembly underpins the formation of lipid bilayers, protein and peptide fibers, viral capsids, and many macromolecular complexes.

Directed self-assembly uses templates, surfaces, external fields, or chemical patterns to steer the organization toward desired geometries or patterns, improving uniformity and defect control. Applications span nanofabrication, materials design, drug delivery systems, biosensing, catalysis, and energy storage. Challenges include managing defect density, achieving scalable production, maintaining stability under processing and environmental conditions, and predicting assembly pathways. Characterization typically employs microscopy, scattering techniques, and spectroscopy to resolve structure, composition, and dynamics. Terminology often distinguishes between self-assembly, self-organization, and directed self-assembly, with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) representing a widely studied subclass.
