While some STIs cause noticeable symptoms, many others do not, making regular testing important for those who are sexually active.

Transmission can occur through the exchange of bodily fluids such as semen, vaginal secretions, and blood, or through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected area. Common STIs include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, HPV (human papillomavirus), HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), and trichomoniasis. Symptoms can vary widely depending on the specific infection and may include unusual discharge, burning during urination, sores, or itching. However, many infections can be asymptomatic for extended periods.

Prevention is a key aspect of managing STIs. Practices like consistent and correct condom use during sexual activity significantly reduce the risk of transmission. Limiting the number of sexual partners and engaging in regular STI testing are also crucial preventive measures. Many bacterial STIs, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, are curable with antibiotics. Viral STIs, like herpes and HIV, are often manageable with antiviral medications, but are typically not curable. Early diagnosis and treatment are vital to prevent complications, which can include infertility, chronic pain, and increased risk of other infections.
