Sekscylindrede

Sekscylindrede is a Danish adjective used to describe engines or devices that have six cylinders. In automotive contexts, it refers to internal combustion engines with six cylinders and is commonly used in Danish-language sources when discussing car propulsion. In English, the term equivalent is six-cylinder or six-cylindered.

The most common six-cylinder layouts are inline-six (straight-six), V6 (two banks of three cylinders), and flat-six (boxer). An inline-six engine is naturally balanced, which gives very smooth operation, though it tends to be long and heavy. A V6 is more compact and can be mounted in shorter engine bays, often used in mid-size and performance cars; its balance depends on crank design and firing order. A flat-six places cylinders horizontally opposite each other, yielding a low center of gravity and good primary balance, a configuration historically associated with certain sports cars.

Historically, six-cylinder engines were among the early steps toward smoother propulsion in automobiles, becoming widespread in luxury and performance models during the mid-20th century.
