Seitenstreuung

Seitenstreuung, also known as side scatter or lateral scattering, refers to the phenomenon where light or other radiation is deflected from its original path and dispersed in various directions as it interacts with a medium. This scattering is not a simple reflection but a complex process involving the interaction of electromagnetic waves with particles or structures within the medium.

The extent and nature of Seitenstreuung depend on several factors, including the size, shape, and refractive index of the scattering particles relative to the wavelength of the incident radiation. For instance, Rayleigh scattering occurs when particles are much smaller than the wavelength of light, causing shorter wavelengths (like blue) to scatter more effectively, which explains the blue color of the sky. Mie scattering, on the other hand, happens when particle size is comparable to or larger than the wavelength, leading to less wavelength-dependent scattering, observable in the white appearance of clouds.
