Seitenspannung is a German term that translates to "side voltage" or "lateral voltage." It is primarily used in the context of electrical engineering and describes the voltage difference measured across the width or side of a conductor, rather than along its length. This phenomenon is distinct from the voltage drop that occurs due to the resistance of a conductor when current flows through it.

Seitenspannung can arise due to several factors. One common cause is the Hall effect, where a magnetic field perpendicular to the current flow in a conductor induces a voltage across its width. This effect is the basis for Hall effect sensors, which are used to measure magnetic field strength and position. Another contributing factor can be uneven current distribution within a conductor, leading to localized voltage differences. This might occur in complex geometries or when dealing with AC currents where skin effect can cause current to concentrate near the surface. In some specialized applications, intentionally creating a Seitenspannung might be desired for sensing or control purposes.
