Seine-Saint-Denis, officially Seine-Saint-Denis, is a department in the Île-de-France region of northern France. It lies immediately northeast of Paris and forms part of the inner ring around the capital. With an area of about 236 square kilometers, it has a population of roughly 1.6 million, making it one of the most densely populated departments in the country. The department is divided into 40 communes; its prefecture is Bobigny, and its largest commune by population is Saint-Denis.

Created in 1968 from the former Seine department, Seine-Saint-Denis emerged during a reorganization of the Île-de-France
