Segukudumine

Segukudumine is a textile technique used to create fabrics by blending multiple fibers within a single fabric structure. In Estonian, "segu" means mixture and "kudumine" means weaving or knitting, reflecting the idea of combining materials during fabric formation.

The method can be implemented in both knitting and weaving. In knit segukudumine, different yarns may be fed into the same fabric path, producing a knit with mixed fiber properties. In woven segukudumine, different yarns are interlaced during the weaving process, creating a fabric with layered or interwoven blends.

Common applications include fashion textiles, outdoor and technical fabrics, and interior upholstery where a balance of strength, insulation, and texture is desired. The technique can be used to tailor properties such as warmth, moisture management, and durability by combining fibers with complementary characteristics.

Materials used range from cotton, wool, and linen to synthetics such as polyester and nylon, and blends can be tuned for color effects and performance. Production considerations include yarn compatibility, tension control, and finishing to ensure uniformity and desirable hand feel.
