Segelkonfigurationen refers to the arrangement and trim of sails on a sailing vessel. This configuration is crucial for efficient propulsion and maneuverability. Different sailing conditions and boat types necessitate specific sail setups.

For a typical monohull sailboat, the primary sails are the mainsail and the headsail (e.g., jib or genoa). The mainsail is usually attached to the mast and boom, while the headsail is forward of the mast. The relationship between these two sails, how they are sheeted (controlled by lines), and their angle to the wind determines the boat's performance.

Catamarans and trimarans, with their multiple hulls, often employ different configurations to take advantage of their wider platforms and stability. These can include larger mainsails and smaller, more easily managed headsails.

The concept of "trimming" is integral to sail configuration. This involves adjusting the angle of the sails to the wind using sheets, halyards, and other control lines. Proper trimming optimizes the sail's shape, creating lift and maximizing forward thrust while minimizing leeway (sideways drift).

Specific sail configurations are also named based on the number and type of sails deployed. For example, sailing with just the mainsail is called "mainsail only," while using both mainsail and headsail is common. In stronger winds, a smaller mainsail (mizzen or reefed mainsail) might be used in conjunction with a jib. In very light winds, specialized sails like spinnakers or gennakers might be deployed. The choice and adjustment of these configurations are fundamental skills for any sailor.
