Silt and clay sediments, with diameters less than 0.0625 millimeters, are finer and more abundant in marine environments. These smaller particles can settle more slowly and facilitate the formation of sedimentary deposits over millions of years. The finer the sediment grain size, the more it influences the properties of the sediment, such as its permeability and binding capacity.
